    Barry, even if it reached 100000 mark, the way treasury has put their foot down, it seems unlikely that, they’ll back down.

    Although, I keep hearing stories from accountants that, it will be watered down once legislation is finalised after consultation ends.

    Treasury does not have to hold debate once it reaches 100K mark, (God help us). I would estimate that, signatures should rise to 200K by the end of Jan 2016.

    The Treasury has moved from the original position already by saying there MAY be an advantage to landlords over owner-occupiers. That’s because they can see all the evidence demonstrates the opposite is true. Since Osborne’s claim was that there IS such an advantage I see this as a very positive development.

    The hurdle we face even if GO agrees 100% with our arguments, is politically GO will find it difficult to do a U-turn on this, the opposition and his enemies within the Conservative party will have a field day scuppering his chances to become the party leader and potentially the next PM.

    Perhaps we should be using in our rhetoric that “GO has been badly advised”.

    Personally I think a Parliamentary debate will be too high profile a forum for the Government to be seen to have got it badly wrong and back down on this proposal. The petition serves to demonstrate the depth of feeling on the proposal.

    Better that it is fought through the Treasury Select Committee and through our individual MPs.

    The forum for government is essentially, consultants employed by treasury who at times, fire blanks and then subsequently realise that, it was not properly thought through.

    Generally, public seems to think, that, it is Osborne’s Policy but as a matter of fact it is his advisers, some of them recent graduates who come up with policies and then he (Osborne) cherry picks.

    My accountant seems to think, that, the adviser who advised him to come up with this policy, is likely to be fired.

    @Saeef,

    I am concerned about your accountant. Does he not know that no one in civil service/Government gets fired.

    He or she has not done anything wrong. As that is his/her view on it. It should be GO to have had the acumen to know where this would lead to.

    It should also have been for GO to not to package this as an equalizing between private landlords & BTL as even a child can see that they are two different animals..

    If this is the standard of Judgement on the part of GO. I wonder what other irrational decisions he would take if God forbid gets into number 10.

    Don’t worry feelings are mutual as I am equally concerned about you by making such bold statement “No one in Civil Service/Government gets fired”

    Is the effective deadline not November. …when the finance bill passes royal assent?

    Politically a u turn will just not happen. Government never admit they where wrong….especially on policies thought through in the same electral session. I believe the best hope is what mark first suggested when the idea of a petition was first muted …..and that is to have this apply to new purchases…..The problem with that though…is that it will be seen to create a 2 tier system….which would be seen as competitively favouring existing landlords over new. So perhaps the best option is a cgt amnesty.
