The DPS launches social media drive to help students be good tenants
The Deposit Protection Service (DPS) has rolled out a fresh initiative called ‘Renting 101’ designed to demystify the renting process for student tenants.
There are nine concise videos in the campaign aimed at students and their families.
The minute-long clips, shared across platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn, cover essential topics.
These include preparing for a tenancy, maintaining a property and handling the return of a deposit when moving out.
Advice for student tenants
The DPS’ managing director, Matt Trevett, said: “The start of term can be daunting for student renters, and we would encourage landlords and letting agents to share these videos with their tenants.
“Students should make sure they have read and understood their tenancy agreement to fully understand their responsibilities, but these bite-sized videos will give them as well as their families and friends an outline understanding of how tenancies work – and what they should do as renters.”
The organisation is also collaborating with university newspapers and student-focused websites to amplify the campaign’s reach.
Needs of young renters
The DPS, which has a longstanding commitment to tenancy education, has previously produced resources like videos on resolving deposit disputes.
This latest effort builds on that legacy, offering accessible guidance tailored to the needs of young renters.

The DPS website doesn’t seem to have a link to the shorts. I’ve found them on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@depositprotection/shorts
