A London council has introduced a ‘Private Rented Sector Tenant’s Charter’ to clarify tenant entitlements, improve housing quality and provide accessible support.

Westminster Council says that with nearly half of its households renting privately, the charter offers essential standards for rental properties.

The charter addresses a range of topics such as damp, mould, illegal evictions and unfair rent practices.

It also covers fire, gas and electrical safety, repairs, pest control, pet policies, energy efficiency, deposits and lawful eviction processes.

Charter is a step forward

Councillor Matt Noble, Westminster’s cabinet member for regeneration and renters, said: “Too many private renters face poor conditions, uncertainty and confusion about what their rights are.

“The Tenant’s Charter is a step toward putting power back in the hands of residents — providing clear, accessible guidance and making it easier to get help when it’s needed.”

Include Renters’ Rights Bill

Developed with input from tenants and the PRS Strategy Group, the charter reflects a collaborative effort to meet renter needs., the council claims.

The publication is available in a range of formats and languages and the council is pledging to regularly update the document – including the Renters’ Rights Bill.

There’s also advice for tenants on accessing local council assistance when issues emerge.

Imagine if Cllr Noble worked in the private sector and had spent company money creating a new charter and when his boss asked ‘what is the market need for this?’, he could only mumble: “too many renters face poor conditions and confusion”. He’d be fired!

well if councils are so cash strapped why has this one spent a fortune on empty pages and colour photographs? Out of 13 pages of the easy read version, only 6 have any information on them. Waste and more waste!!!!
