Universal Credit – What is all the fuss about?

More and more over the last few weeks there have been articles discussing the Governments flag ship Universal credit system, this has been the most major shakeup in the Welfare Reform in 40 years. Currently there are two services; Universal Credit Live Service and Universal Credit Full Service.

The Government hope to have Universal Credit fully rolled out by 2022 and are slowly transitioning those from the Live Service to the Full Service affecting 8 million people across the UC.

To date, the rollout, has been controversial and has affected many, this includes claimants, Private Landlords and even Social Housing organizations

Since the roll out DWP have issued several guides for landlords, the most recent being In August 2017.

The purpose of the guide is to advise landlords how they can support their tenants that are on Universal Credit. Disappointingly the guide failed to provide vital information such as the complaints procedure for landlords and address the several faults and delays, which have been identified to have resulted in some tenants losing their home due to arrears, some cases through no fault of their own Universal.

To date the new system seem to still have many flaws and inconsistencies with call centre staff misinterpreting Government guidelines.

Caridon Landlord Solutions are at hand to help landlords deal with the issues faced and more importantly have an impact on Government legislation to enable changes for the greater good.

Let’s face it guys Universal Credit is here to stay so we need to work together in order to make it work for us as Landlords.
