Three-quarters of tenants in England say they are happy with their renting experience, with only a small minority reporting dissatisfaction, research reveals.

According to Pepper Money, it found 74% of private renters describe themselves as happy in their current home, while 11% say they are unhappy.

Satisfaction levels remain steady across the country, although some regions stand out more than others.

The data also points to landlords who live close to their properties tending to drive higher tenant satisfaction levels.

Tenants have a positive experience

The lender’s sales director, Paul Adams, said: “It is encouraging to see that most tenants report positive renting experiences, particularly where landlords remain closely involved with their properties.

“Our research shows that when landlords are engaged and responsive, tenants feel the benefit directly through well-maintained homes, quicker repairs and a greater sense of stability and trust, all of which help sustain a functioning rental sector.”

Pepper Money says that renters in the South East and South West recorded the strongest results, each posting happiness levels of 78%.

The West Midlands and East Midlands followed on 74%, while London and Yorkshire and the Humber both returned 73%.

The North West, East of England and North East each registered 72%, indicating broadly consistent sentiment nationwide.

Landlords score higher when nearby

Across England, 77% of tenants whose landlord lives within 40 miles say they are happy.

That figure slips to 71% when the distance stretches beyond 50 miles.

The study also shows that seven in 10 tenants (69%), say they want to buy a home in the future.

Meanwhile, 29% believe they could reach a financial position to do so within the next three years.
