In a speech to the Conservative Party Conference, Michael Gove made no mention of the Private Rented Sector or the Renters’ Reform Bill.

Instead, the Housing Secretary focused on resisting plans to build on the green belt and plans to build more homes.

Mr Gove also mentioned building new homes to energy efficiency standards.

A million new homes

Michael Gove told the Conference the Conservatives will deliver a million new homes.

He said: “We need to ensure every family has a decent safe and warm home. We need to ensure young people can have a home of their own and we are on track to deliver a million new homes in this Parliament.

“Our long-term plan for housing will deliver attractive affordable new homes that we need.”

Mr Gove added that all newly built homes will be energy efficient and carbon neutral.

Not building on green belt

The Housing Secretary resisted calls from Labour and the Liberal Democrats to build on green belt and instead will focus building homes on brownfield land.

“We will build in towns and cities and on brownfield land because that protects the green belt. We will resist the proposals of the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats to build all over the green belt and to destroy precious natural habitats.”

He added: “Labour must not be allowed to take our fields and forests away from our children and we will stop them.”

Not a high priority

Generation Rent complained that the Bill was not mentioned in the speech.

Connor O’Shea, policy and public affairs manager at Generation Rent, said on X, formerly Twitter: “Not a single mention of renters or the Renters’ Reform Bill in Housing Secretary Michael Gove’s speech at conference.

“More worries that the issue is not as high a priority as we have been assured.”
