Oh, just because I don't like them very much to be honest. And it annoyed me to think I would be paying the 3% and they wouldn't under the proposed rules. That's all. At least the Blair family with their BTL company owning 27 flats will now in fact have to pay the 3% SDLT in future, rather than being exempt for owning more than 15 properties. Something small to smile at :-)... Read More

Council Tax allowance used previously before purchase?

I had a similar situation with a property I bought (stoke on trent council). The stoke on trent version of the allowance had been used up prior to me buying it, as it had been empty for over a year. As Romain says, the allowance applies to the property, not the person who owns it. If your local authority is similar, it gives you more incentive to finish the refurb quickly. And any future properties, a good idea to check out the council tax situation as soon as you buy, to avoid any nasty shocks at a later date.... Read More

Thanks for the extra info Tony, and sounds like your business will unfortunately become more complex / costly for you soon. And yes my property was bought outright with cash, I am only a very small business so can only afford to do one at a time because I don't have enough spare cash for more, and as you say mortgages are not possible in my case either.... Hi Tony, my example was a ltd company doing property development that only owns 1 property at a time (buy and do up, then sell, and only then buy the next one), do you think it will still somehow get caught up in the tax and if so why?... Read More
