Why UK landlords are flocking to Portugal

I understand that whilst Portugal's non-habitual resident (“NHR”) taxation regime is not subject to minimum or maximum stay requirements you are however required to have the "ability" to stay in Portugal for a minimum of 182 days e.g. In a property that you own or rent - even if you do not actually do so. I understand hotels and short stay accommodation would not qualify in this regard. Furthermore if you reside in the U.K. for more than 90 days you will remain subject to U.K. taxation irrespective of your Portuguese NHR status. If on the other hand you are able to avoid the U.K. taxation altogether you would lose you U.K. tax free allowance.
If anyone knows otherwise I would love to hear more! 🙂... Read More

Landlord Reactions To The 2017 Autumn Budget

I was once contacted by Bailiffs who had been instructed to enforce a court order against me. It seems that Manchester City Council had taken me to Court for non payment of Council Tax on a rental property that I own. Unfortunately the summons was served not at the rental property but at a home address that I had lived at 4 years earlier so I was unable to respond.
All of this might seem reasonable you think - until you realise the claim was for 100% of the Council Tax for an alleged one day void totalling ........£1.70!
I appealed the case successfully as they had miscalculated and no Council Tax was in fact due.
Not quite sure how much that fiasco cost the genuine Council Tax payers of Manchester.... Read More

Property118 Members vs West Bromwich Mortgage Company

I spoke with a friend of mine yesterday. I suspect his situation may be fairly typical - he has several buy to let properties but only one with the West Brom. He reasoned that payments had only gone up by £100pcm and he hadn't bothered to join us as he may be selling that property next year to raise some cash.
I pointed out that that is £1200 pa or £18,000 over the remaining term! With the rate reinstated he would probably never get cheaper money again.
He has now decide to join us and intends to sell another property instead.
It's not too late for others but it will be soon!... Read More
