From the strange to the stomach-churning, here are real UK (and UK-reported) stories of what landlords discovered once the keys were back on the hook. If you have your own tale, please share it in the comments.

1) 3,000 Beer Cans, Some Filled With Urine

In Nuneaton, a “mate’s rates” arrangement ended with a flat piled high with roughly 3,000 cans and bags of waste. Local press covered the clear-out and the human story behind it: Express & Star. Related coverage also appeared on Yahoo UK.

2) A Hidden Room Behind the Kitchen Cupboard

Not everything is foul — sometimes it is just weird. UK renters once found a concealed room tucked behind a kitchen cupboard, complete with its own door. The discovery made international odd-news columns: Yahoo News.

3) Snakes in the Walls

There have been multiple snake stories over the years. One landlord in St Helens was “gobsmacked” to find a four-foot desert kingsnake curled up behind a fireplace during works: Newsweek. Other “landlord finds boa constrictor” tales have also surfaced in UK media round-ups.

4) A Full-Blown Cannabis Farm

At the more serious end, a Guardian investigation followed landlords whose homes were covertly converted to cannabis grows by a rogue letting outfit — the aftermath included wrecked electrics, water damage and months of recovery: The Guardian.

In Greater Manchester, a landlord entered a recently vacated flat and found 22 pet tarantulas abandoned in tubs. Only four survived and were rehomed by the RSPCA.

Some years ago a tenant on housing benefits – finally evicted owing many months rent – left behind her bedroom floor littered with clothes, her Rampant Rabbit vibrator, and a pole used for pole dancing….oh and a kitchen cupboard with a potato forest, and a stinking fridge full of dead flies…nice!

This was something I found in the shed of a property I had just bought. Over 2000 Mason and Cash pudding dishes still boxed, brand new.

Took me 4 years to sell them at £1 to £2 each and I still have a few left now for myself.
