There is a strong possibility that the demands were correctly issued to the previous owner, if so and not paid then they will fall to the current owner. I think I would seek to recover the cost from the solicitors...

I doubt that there is any comeback as it is unlikely you would have had an unconditional commitment to providing the funds or to provide them by a certain time.
It may be the freeholder is playing hardball, but it could also be that the freeholder has had a Health & Safety Inspection carried out and the report says they would cause an obstruction in the event of a fire....
