Quite the most illuminating survey I’ve seen. As older landlords die capital gains tax will force break up of portfolios resulting in an accelerated irreversible decline. It also illustrates that more mature landlords who are responsible and fair dominate the...
So let me get this right.First the government plans reforms.Second they decide to consult. Third they decide to postpone for a year while they engage with industry. I’m not so sure it wouldn’t have made more sense to tackle this...
Maybe they are but unfortunately our politicians will ensure Landlords are blamed. We all know the real cause is lack of housing and is a failure of successive governments.
We need to keep Pennycooks feet firmly to then fire on this. If the government fails then the government should pick up the bill. It would be great if the NRLA could spend some of their 10 million a year...
Matthew Pennycook asserts that landlords are not leaving the sector seems to fly in the face of the facts. If he’s wrong and the sector is adversely affected then he may pay the price with a rather short career. More...
I believe it addresses the political problem that successive governments have failed to ensure enough of the right type of housing was built.Such action would have created competition which would have solved most of the problems they will try to...
As always the Landlord Crusader hits the mark, but our politicians are blind to the facts. The only explanation that makes sense to me is that they will do anything to divert attention away from the root cause of the housing...
If our politicians put half as much effort into building homes as it does persecuting good landlords we might just create an efficient and competitive marketplace. Making letting more expensive with additional taxes and red tape raises rents and hurts...
Andrew I liked this so much I put my thumb up ten times. I have been in the business for 20 years and am sick of being hated by our politicians. They are entirely to blame for not ensuring an...
Please don’t take this as definitive, I’m not an expert. Also I have not looked at your arguments in detail so I apologise if I say something you already have considered.Continue to seek best advice when necessary. I think HMRC...
I’m sorry to say you’re right…we end in complete agreement. I still have the naive notion that honesty and integrity are values to which we should aspire. I wish you well with your battle with HMRC. I qualified as a...
Interesting comment. Many private landlords are highly geared too. Really this is an additional tax on tenants, so large landlords and housing associations would need to increase rents accordingly as private landlords have already done. This assumes our politicians value...
Yes I agree but this doesn’t preclude interest being disallowed for if the government so choses. If it happens in the budget then we will see how, if not it remains irrelevant.
Property rental is distinctive in that it is classified as unearned rather than earned income to the individual. I suppose this could be used also to classify the special activity of corporate rental and apply a similar treatment of interest...
I wonder if S24 will be extended to Limited Companies in the forthcoming budget? It would seem to be a logical move to level the playing field although it doesn’t seem to have any press. If so, I suspect those...
Tom. Remember the reduced IHT rate you mention would only apply if your parents made lifetime gifts that completely covered the 325000 IHT allowance. In this case HMRC would come to you for payment at the rates you speak of. If...

Reply to the comment left by Monty Bodkin at 05/04/2026 - 10:13Run by rogue Landlords who will increasingly replace good landlords. Right?
