Universal Credit Full Service

By the end of this year, every area in Great Britain will be delivering Universal Credit Full Service – with the new style benefit expected to replace all existing means-tested benefits by October 2022.

So, if you either take, or are considering taking benefit tenants, then the RLA’s Universal Credit course for PRS landlords and letting agents is a must.

What is ‘full service?’

So far Universal Credit claims have been restricted to mainly single unemployed claimants. However full service will see the scheme rolled out to all other households reliant on benefits to pay all or part of their rent.

It also operates under different rules, with 90% of applications to be made online – a difficult and protracted process for many of the landlords already in full service areas.

What will I learn?

The course will cover:

• how the new benefit will be assessed and paid
• how changes will affect the award and payments
• the likely effect this will have on your tenants
• your own collection arrangements, rental income and rent arrears control

After completing the course you should be able to properly advise your tenants on how and when to claim and help them avoid missing out on payments to stay on top of their rent.

Bill Irvine, UC Advice & Advocacy Ltd delivers the RLA’s Universal Credit courses.

Bill is an ex Government Advisor on Housing Benefits and, who for the past five years, has been successfully representing RLA members in disputes with councils and DWP and, where required, mediates and represents members before First & Upper-tier Tribunals.
