Buy to let landlords are on a collision course with the government as most are determined to defy pleas to reduce their rents in line with proposed cuts for tenants on benefits.

The shameful state of Britain’s housing market is revealed in a new poll of attitudes to renting carried out by one of the country’s biggest housebuilders.

Buy to let landlords could see their rents and property prices plunge if they are listed in a crime black spot on police maps published online for the first time.

Some landlords have had the bright idea of making money from their tenants by renting their roofs  to solar energy firms that generate power they can sell.

Capital allowances, particularly on property acquisitions, are often unclaimed or under claimed because of the difficulty in identifying and valuing qualifying expenditure or simply knowing what allowances can be claimed. It is estimated that more than 90% of Capital Allowances are not fully claimed.

Despite the credit crisis and recession, house prices have almost doubled in the past 10 years, according to mortgage lender the Halifax.  That’s an annual compound growth rate of over 7%.

Buy to let specialist Paragon has advanced £8.8 million of loans and has a further £75 million of property investment deals in the pipeline, according to the lender’s interim management statement.
