A recent report from B&Q suggested that red was the most popular colour choice in the paint stakes. They, like me, will attribute that to a feature wall colour in homes. The report also suggested magnolia had ceased to be the favourite wall colour.

A few things are apparent here, red isn’t the predominant wall colour, but has always been a fail safe “feature wall” colour – and magnolia bit the dust years ago in favour of shades of white – yes, there is a difference!

Of course this ties in with people not moving home, but actually making their space more personal to them.  Red isn’t everyone’s cup of tea!

The message to landlords and developers is still the same- white or off white works best. With some towns split red and blue- would you want to upset 50% of the population before they even really considered your property? Is it  worth putting such a personal mark on a property you intend not to live in yourself- but to sell or rent out?

Unfortunately that is where sometimes landlords and developers can let themselves down, better to furnish with a pair of faux leather sofas and some black and white tasteful prints of local area than over personalise. Even whites, beige etc can have different background tones- ask a designer! A green, pink, brown, yellow underlying shade. Do not mix them!

Some years ago I furnished a flat in Liverpool- shades of grey and cream. But the tiny hallway had Red and White Liverpool Football Club wallpaper. I think the owner on East Coast felt right at home once he opened his front door!

There’s a time and place for everything.
