Newham has the highest eviction rate in England

Newham came top in a report carried out by Shelter on the number of mortgage and landlord possession claims in each Local Authority area for the last year.

The possession claims figures are taken from Ministry of Justice Analysis and based on the total number of landlord and mortgage claims in each area. The figures only include possession claims where a court process has begun, and there will be many more households that move voluntarily before they are evicted or forced to sell.

The total number of landlord and mortgage possession claims in England between April 2013 and March 2014 were 215,305 with Newham topping the table as the most likely area to be evicted with 2,944 possession representing 1 claim for every 34 households.

These figures obviously do not represent the full picture and haven’t shown an individual break down of the numbers of tenants evicted, but it does not prove any kind of success for the controversial selective licencing scheme brought in by Newham Council and widely criticised by Landlords and the PRS as a whole.

However Newham and Ed Miliband would probably counter with this as proof of why we need selective licencing, rent caps and three year tenancies.

London Boroughs take the top 14 worst ratio’s for eviction with Nottingham UA the first area outside the capital. However unsurprisingly Kensington and Chelsea have the lowest ratio at 1 in 87.

Shelter CEO Campbell Robb said “these staggering figures show just how many families go through the trauma of learning that their home is at risk, every single week. People are hearing that the economy is recovering, but we’re seeing the reality that many families across the country are still battling to keep their heads above water and keep their homes. Just one thing such as a job loss or serious illness can tip any of us into a downward spiral that puts our home at risk.”

Kris Hopkins the Housing Minister said “official Government statistics show repossession claims are falling and in the last quarter were at their lowest for a decade. This has only been achieved because of this Government’s long-term economic plan, which is fixing the broken housing market and tackling the record deficit we inherited.”Newham

i think im correct in saying that Newham has the biggest PRS in england. if so then these figures are not surprising.
regarding licensing, this actively promotes evictions, eg when tenants are committing ASB.

Bearing in mind that Newham has the largest PRS and the largest ratio of evictions (i.e 1 in 34) that's a HUGE amount of evictions!

The spin doctors will no doubt use this to justify licencing whereas I would suggest that licensing is a primary cause of the problem!

it would be more informative if the table was presented as percentages of the size of the PRS.

Is this just S21 actions or all actions?

The figures only include possession claims where a court process has begun but all types.

I expect that Newham has LOTS of tenants being hit with the benefit cap. Maybe when some of them are replaced with working people Newham will become a nicer area to live in.

In the past, it has been seen as the dump ground of London for people that no other area would take.

while there arent many nice parts of newham, i think your impression of newham is a little out of date. i would say a lot of the dss have moved out along the district line to barking and dagenham some time ago and more recently much further afield. i did read not long ago that it is barking and dag. which has the highest number of evictions (perhaps that was as a percentage). newham is very popular with working people as its so close to the city, docklands/ canary wharf and stratford (which is a major transport hub, shopping destination and soon to be employment centre). a few years ago we had a tenant in stratford whose daddy paid her deposit on a coutts cheque...not seen before in newham.

So we cannot tell if it is nasty landlords abusing their tenants or tenants/owners not adhering to their comitments.

I expect it will be portrayed as the former.
