Is Decorex Losing Its Voice?

Decorex has always been considered the best of the Design Shows. They have a reputation for finding and steering new talent forward, it’s innovative, cutting edge and full of great ideas- they are the Milan catwalk of the Interiors world.

Or are they now? Is there just a bit, well a lot, of the  “Emperor’s New Clothes” about them.

I didn’t go this year, but I have visited this exhibition in the past. I was desperate to find out what was new, what was hot, who to look out for. So, I did what any socially media aware person does and took to Twitter. Using the hashtag #decorex and following links back-

If you cut through the fancy displays of shells and lego bricks and cheap but colourful moodboards (what was that about?) oh and the people there just saying how they loved blogging but didn’t really say much about what was there, we had…

  • Berry shades are still popular- purples through to reds, bit of orange
  • Some playing about with gold sinks/ taps- won’t last
  • Wallhangings , the handmade etsy style
  • Harlequin launching range of lighting through Elstead – Walker Greenback now one to watch financially
  • A lot of over priced plain fabrics. I won’t go into the fact many inexpensive and expensive use the same mill, it’s just the “name”
  • I would say use good fringe even if it is expensive- can’t make fringe cheaply.

No doubt there was much networking, but really, if you love design and interior design, it’s the products that count. I do sometimes wonder how much clients realise that they have paid for that Merc their designer is now running around in.

I see primary colours next year, yellow and shades of grey 2013. And the people revolting against the Emperor.
