Council of Letting Agents (Scotland) announcementScottish Association of Landlords (SAL) directors are pleased to announce the appointment of Kathleen Gell as convenor of the newly formed Council of Letting Agents (CLA).

This new division of SAL aims to support and represent the interests of SAL letting agent members.

John Blackwood, chief executive of SAL welcomed Kathleen today, saying “We are very pleased to announce Kathleen’s appointment and look forward working with her in the setting up and development of the new CLA steering group. Without doubt the next 12 months will mark a great change in the way that letting agents are regulated in Scotland. SAL needs to ensure that our members’ views and opinions continue to be heard by policy makers. The new CLA affords us a dedicated division to further support these members.

Recognising the challenge that lies ahead, Kathleen Gell, CLA convenor reports: ‘I’m delighted to have been invited by SAL to be convenor of the steering group. This is an exciting development and a timely and very welcome move by SAL. I look forward very much to working with a representative group of letting agents from around Scotland to define the role and objectives of the CLA, a body which, I feel sure, will be  a powerful collective voice for letting agents in Scotland.

“I heartily welcome the recognition by the Scottish Government that letting agents play an important role in assisting the delivery of high quality services to tenants and prospective tenants, enable effective management and maintenance of privately rented properties and, importantly, that letting agents can help to ensure that landlords meet their regulatory responsibilities.

“I welcome the Housing Minister’s declared intention to improve PRS quality by working with all partners and stakeholders to identify the most effective form for further regulation of the letting agent industry in Scotland,  considering legislative change where required.

“I feel sure that the CLA will work hard to ensure that this is done in such a way as to bring tangible benefits to the sector rather than being merely a “tick list”.  Key to that will be how any regulation is enforced.  I look forward to working with the Scottish Government on development of this, and other, relevant legislation. I’m confident that the CLA will bring experience and wisdom to those discussions.”
